SPANISH AVIATION AUTHORITY SELECTS STRIX SYSTEMS’ WIRELESS MESH FOR ALL 23 AIRPORTS NATIONWIDE

Strix’s Integrated Indoor/Outdoor Wireless Mesh to Provide Wi-Fi Connectivity, wVoIP, and Video Surveillance for Spain’s Airport Operations

CORE NEWS FACTS

CALABASAS, Calif., June 20 – Strix Systems, the leader in high-performance wireless mesh networking, today announced that AENA, the Spanish Airport Authority, has selected Strix’s Access/One® Network Outdoor Wireless Systems (OWS) and Indoor Wireless Systems (IWS) to provide wireless data, voice, and video for all 23 of Spain’s airport operations. Deployments are already complete at the Madrid, Barcelona, Bilbao, and Malaga airports, and the remaining 19 will be completed over the next 18 months

AENA chose a combination of Strix Systems’ IWS and OWS after testing Strix’s network. CN&C, Strix’s partner, and AENA determined that Strix’s multi-radio, multi-channel, multi-RF solution was the only wireless system that could simultaneously support multiple real-time services such as Internet connectivity for airport visitors, wireless VoIP (wVoIP) applications for airport personnel, wireless video surveillance for terminals, and other innovative applications such as baggage control and the remote parking of planes.

Strix’s modular, multi-radio architecture allows for simple configuration and automatic self-tuning of radios within a node, providing a customizable approach to deploying wireless mesh that ensures the highest performance even when additional services and applications are deployed or the network is expanded. This flexibility and scalability enabled CN&C to configure a solution that supports the mix of cutting-edge applications that AENA desired.
Strix Solution Supports Wide Range of Applications

Strix’s mesh network provides private network connectivity for businesses within the airport, while also enabling multiple service providers in each airport to rent Service Set Identifications (SSIDs) and provide public access to visitors. Strix’s integrated indoor/outdoor solution also enables AENA to install video surveillance equipment wherever it is needed, even in hard-to-wire areas, and thus allow for surveillance both within and outside of terminals. This integration also lets AENA deploy state-of-the-art baggage control systems that increase the efficiency of baggage delivery.  Strix’s ability to wirelessly transmit information to a central server enables the remote parking of planes, which simplifies the taxiing process.

“AENA came to us looking for a wireless solution that could easily manage and support the bandwidth-intensive applications it wanted to deploy,” said Vicente Ariguita, president of CN&C. “AENA’s airports are extremely advanced; they are some of the first in the world to use advanced baggage control and plane parking applications.  We knew right away that Strix was the only system that could provide the high performance AENA needed for these applications today and the scalability required to continue its tradition of innovation in the future.”

“To be selected by AENA as the sole wireless system provider for all of Spain’s airports is an amazing validation of the scalability and high performance that Strix’s multi-radio mesh network can provide,” said Jim Mooreland, vice president of worldwide sales at Strix Systems. “AENA is deploying a myriad of innovative applications that are truly changing the way airports are run.  We look forward to supporting all future applications as AENA continues to deploy Strix throughout the nation’s airports.”

The First of AENA’s deployed networks is at the Madrid Barajas International Airport, which has over 25 million visitors per year; the network consists of over 1000 radios that enable both indoor and outdoor access and wireless applications.

About Strix OWS
The Strix Access/One OWS and IWS modular mesh products deliver the largest capacity (up to six radios and 768 users per node, three to six times the norm), highest throughput (five times the norm at 35 Mbps), and best scalability (users can add more radio boards, WiMAX modules, or new technologies). An independent wireless mesh test sponsored by Light Reading and completed in June 2006 found Strix’s OWS 2400-30 delivers the best throughput and capacity, the greatest scalability for voice applications, and the best mobility/roaming. Strix networks scale to 10 or more wireless hops with near-zero throughput loss and latency. Customers can deliver real-time applications with a minimum of wired connections for a given area, which reduces CapEx and OpEx.
