Strix Systems Access/One Network Selected by Premiere Radio Networks

Premiere Radio Networks Deploys the Access/One Network for Wireless Connectivity

Calabasas, Calif. – April 5, 2004 – Strix Systems, Inc. today announced that Premiere Radio Networks, the number one radio network in the United States and a subsidiary of Clear Channel Worldwide (NYSE:CCU), has successfully deployed Access/One Network as its enterprise wireless system. The installation, on six floors of one building and one floor of a neighboring building, provides employees of the Sherman Oaks, Calif.-based organization with unprecedented mobile connectivity.

The network now provides 802.11b access in offices, programming studios, outdoor patios, and its network operations center (NOC). With wireless connectivity to the NOC, administrators have access to the network even if the primary building is unmanned.

“The reliability of this system encourages mobility in more ways than one,” said Roger Seflinger, director of information technology at Premiere Radio Networks. “Employees now have the freedom to congregate in various settings, like our outdoor patio area.”

Premiere Radio uninstalled its previous access points and opted for Access/One Network so that it could have greater manageability, security and ease of use. The network is centrally managed by Strix’s network management tool Manager/One. From any point on the network, IT administrators using a Web browser can access this tool in order to configure, diagnose and monitor the activities and health of the wireless network. Wired nodes are deployed using traditional power, or power-over-Ethernet. In addition some nodes were deployed in areas difficult to run Ethernet, so Premiere Radio used the wireless uplink feature available with the Access/One Network. This eliminates the need for Ethernet cabling to the node or access point, relying instead on a wireless relay back to the wired network.

Security Considerations
“We wanted a system that could provide the security of the wired world,” said Seflinger. “Consider that we are in the position of not only providing wireless access for our employees, but also trying to provide limited access to visitors, a common occurrence at Premiere Radio. We needed a system open enough to provide access for those guests, yet secure enough to discourage any attempts to compromise our network.”

To accomplish this level of security, Premiere Radio used Access/One Network in combination with Microsoft Server 2000 to provide 802.1x for authentication of users and varying encryption schemes to protect the traffic.

Premiere Radio was especially impressed with the rogue access point detection capabilities of the Access/One Network. “I appreciate the ability to monitor my environment to ensure that employees or visiting consultants have not plugged unauthorized access points in my network creating a potential security threat” said Jim Zangara, IT manager for Premiere. “Now that we are able to offer a secure WLAN for our employees, this is less of an issue, but I like that the Access/One Network will alert me if it discovers an unauthorized access point.”
