Telus deploys Strix Access/One OWS for 2007 Worldcup FIFA U2 Soccer

Worldcup FIFA U2 Soccer GamesTelus deploys Strix Access/One OWS for 2007 Worldcup FIFA U2 Soccer

TELUS, the largest national telecommunications company in Western Canada and the second largest in the country, deployed Strix Systems Access/One® Network Outdoor Wireless Systems (OWS) for live real-time communications for reporters during the FIFA U2 World Cup Soccer Championships in Canada.

The Victoria games were held at Victoria’s Royal Athletic Park.  The wireless WiFi mesh network was deployed as a test to prove the solution would meet the communication needs of reporters at the world-wide acclaimed event.

Royal Athlectic Park is a multi-purpose stadium in Victoria used primarily for soccer and American football. Originally owned privately, the land on which the ground stands was purchased by the city in 1925 and underwent restoration and overhaul in 1967.

This deployment and venue provided Telus with an opportunity to showcase and put the Strix Systems gear to test in a variety of ways from design to procurement to deployment and finally support.  Telus and Strix worked together in a cohesive effort to achieve the timeline and performance goals which included a few days for site survey, design and deployment to gain complete stadium coverage with only three Strix Access/One OWS nodes.

The portability and flexibility of configuration was impressive.  The entire network was configured off-site and deployed to the remote location shortly before the games commenced.  The Strix Access/One nodes provided a constant level of predictable and reliable performance which proved to stand up to peak level usage during the games.  The performance during the games was solid

These high profile FIFA games are covered by numerous reporters from around the world.   The network extended the communications network to the field where pictures were taken and immediately uploaded to the required news servers. During the games, it was reported that up to 50% of the reporters opted to access their information systems via the deployed wireless network.  In most cases, the reporters even had Ethernet cables easily available to them. The reporters stated that the degree of mobility provided to them through the wireless network enabled them to move around the stadium without having to worry about network access.

“This is a good example of how the multi-use capabilities of Strix Access/One products create a solution to previously complicated or irresolvable problems.”  Strix Systems, Martin Levetin, vice president of carrier and municipal networks.   “The solution just works. Very few OWS nodes were required for total coverage and high throughput. In the scheme of things this is a very small installation, certainly one of great significance in the sports world.”
